I first came across the work of Hung Vanngo one day when absent mindedly scrolling through Instagram, and was immediately struck by thoughts of “Who IS this insanely talented guy?” and “Why in Gods name have I only just heard of him?!” Not that my having heard of an artist is a mark of anything whatsoever… But considering Hung has worked for publications such as Vogue Italia, Elle, V, Dazed and Confused, and with photographers such as Craig McDean and Ellen Von Unwerth, well, shame on me.
Born in Vietnam, before spending three childhood years in Thai refugee camps, Hung’s family emigrated to Canada, from where he eventually moved to New York. His approach to solid hard work is inspiring, and as you can see below the portfolio he has built up along the way is pretty damn inspiring too.
What initially drew me in that day on Instagram was the skin work. I am obsessed with glowing, natural hyper-real skin, and Hung’s skin work, even in unretouched behind-the-scenes phone pics, is quite frankly some of the best I’ve ever seen.. He professes to spending at least 25 minutes prepping skin on a shoot before even thinking about the makeup, and as such his girls are flawless, radiant and dewy beyond belief. His looks always have a strong focus, often with a bold or innovative use of colour, yet his makeups never overwhelm the beauty beneath them, and it’s artists like Hung Vanngo that inspire me to continue down that route in my own work. He describes his style as “classic looks with a modern twist”, a pretty spot on description as you can see from the gorgeous gallery below. Enjoy!
