Spider Lashes! Inspiration And Product Picks

When I was at school there was one girl, like there is at most high schools, who really didn’t know when to say when on the mascara front. She must’ve piled on half a tube of the stuff every morning, clumping her lashes into five or six thick black twigs, in was what could’ve delicately been referred to as a “makeup faux pas”. At the time it was not considered to be a good look.  But of course, fast forward 15 years and as a makeup artist I’m all over it.

Don’t get me wrong, it takes a bold girl with unique style to really rock this look outside of an editorial or off the runway, and it works best set against fresh skin and little else, but it can be done! Either way, no matter the setting there’s something about the graphic look of it, that punk, don’t-give-a-fuck, bad-girl-smoking-behind-the-bike-sheds-vibe that you just can’t get with anything else. Even Beyonce rocked her own spider lashes in the “Flawless” video and if it’s good enough for our Bey then it’s good enough for the rest of the entire universe.

I like to layer my mascaras for this look. My all time favourite combo for creating those blacker than black super-graphic lashes is to start with a few generous coats of;

1. Benefit They’re Real Mascara – £19.50 . . . A great base mascara, giving generous amounts of curl and volume, but the brush is the real hero here. It’s design allows you to manoeuvre the beginnings of your baby spider lashes into the position you want, before going in with…

2. Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara – £16 . . . If Benefit is the foundation of your clumpalicious lashes then this stuff is the bricks and mortar. Seriously black and creamy in texture, with a big fat beast of a brush that let’s you pile on the product. And really go for it here, don’t hold back, five coatings or even more is not too much. You don’t want folk thinking you’re just shoddy at applying mascara, you want those clumpy lashes to be right up  in their face! Not enough? You want MORE?! Well then you need…

3. L’Oreal Mega Volume Miss Manga Punky Mascara – £8.99 . . . All hail the current Queen of the spider lash mascaras. The first of it’s kind that I’m aware of, that’s latched onto the trend and been created especially for it. The name baffles me, I’m guessing the folk at L’Oreal thought putting “clumpy” on a mascara tube was a bad idea? Well it wouldn’t have turned me off, I would’ve made a beeline straight for it. Either way this is the pièce de résistance. If you want lashes so thick and synthetic you can see them from space, then you need this stuff. Punky indeed.
